ABOUT

JENNY SHORTER

I am a photomontage artist and create complex digital pieces which filter the everyday through the prism of myth, story-telling and dreams. I am inspired by both nature and the urban environment, and by early surrealist painting.

I live in Eastbourne on the South Coast and my work is a retelling of what I see around me; whether this is families on the beach; the wind-bent trees and sheep of the South Downs, or workmen repairing roads in town.

The photos I take are often unremarkable in themselves but, when combined, reveal  the mystery just beneath the surface. I typically take up to 70 photos for a new piece – carefully knitting together 30-40 of these to create a single composite image.

I am currently working on a series of ‘impossible panoramas’ which are a playful take on various aspects of local life, often with startling juxtapositions.

I trained in photography and graphic design, and my work has been exhibited in London, East Sussex and online. In Autumn 2023, two pieces were selected for the Sussex Contemporary Open and Atelier by the Seaside in Brighton.

In May and June 2024 my panoramas were chosen for two international online exhibitions showcasing emerging artists curated by MetaSpace Gallery and Cista Arts. As a member of the East Sussex Blue Monkey Network I exhibited in VOLT Gallery, Eastbourne in July 2024.
